Kelli Richards earned her Interior Design diploma from Inter-Dec College (now LaSalle College) in 2013, and now works as an interior designer in Montréal and runs her own interior design company, Kelli Richards Design. On June 27, the business woman shared her experience with LaSalle College students.

Her talk, The Business of Interior Design, gave students a better understanding of how the interior design world works, from a business point of view. The students learned a lot from her experience and her successful business approach.

Kelli has designed many commercial and residential spaces in Montréal, which showcase her signature clean and minimalist style.

Being a successful businessperson

“An interior designer is a problem solver!”

As in any business, the first step to gain customers’ trust is to stand by a theme or a design idea, explained Kelli Richards. Don’t be afraid to say no to their choices or suggestions. But make sure to do it in a constructive manner and give them another option.

And, like all young professionals, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Customers don’t always know how to express what they want. By asking the right questions, you’ll save a lot of time and money.

Lastly, in this industry you should never turn down a project, no matter how small it is. Indeed, Kelli Richards emphasized how every single contract gives you the opportunity to learn something.

Thank you, Kelli for sharing your experience and passion with the LaSalle College students!
